Problems facing India today - overpopulation, illiteracy, corruption

India is one of the most poorest countries in the world. A new multidimensional poverty Index shows that India is far poorer than Africa in both intensity and in number. The Multidimensional Poverty Index developed by Oxford University (which will appear in the upcoming UNDP human development report) shows that India is far poorer than Africa not just in number but also in intensity. Th new poverty measure shows that 8 states out of the 29 states in India have more poor people than 26 poorest African countries combined. The Multidimensional poverty index views poverty from several different angles instead of just GDP figures. India like any other developing country is crippled by so many problems. For example, India's population growth rate is increasing by the day putting pressure on the limited resources and leaving many Indians in absolute poverty. India is very poor in terms of education, in terms of economic improvement, infrastructure, heath care, etc. Here are some of the problems facing India today. In today's India, there is nothing but:

1. HIGH INFLATION RATES.

Fueled by rising wages, property prices and food prices inflation in India is an increasing problem. Inflation is currently between 6-7%. A record 98% of Indian firms report operating close to full capacity (2)With economic growth of 9.2% per anum inflationary pressures are likely to increase, especially with supply side constraints such as infrastructure. The wholesale-price index (WPI), rose to an annual 6.6% in January 2007 (1)



2. POOR GIRL CHILD EDUCATION

Although India has benefited from a high % of English speakers. (important for call centre industry) there is still high levels of illiteracy amongst the population. It is worse in rural areas and amongst women. Over 50% of Indian women are illiterates



3. POOR INFRASTRUCTURE

Many Indians lack basic amenities lack access to running water. Indian public services are creaking under the strain of bureaucracy and inefficiency. Over 40% of Indian fruit rots before it reaches the market; this is one example of the supply constraints and inefficiency’s facing the Indian economy.


4. BALANCE OF PAYMENT DETERIORATION

Although India has built up large amounts of foreign currency reserves the current account deficit has deteriorate in recent months. This deterioration is a result of the overheating of the economy. Aggregate Supply cannot meet Aggregate demand so consumers are sucking in imports. Excluding workers remittances India’s current account deficit is approaching 5% of GDP



5. HIGH LEVELS OF DEBTS

Buoyed by a property boom the amount of lending in India has grown by 30% in the past year. However there are concerns about the risk of such loans. If they are dependent on rising property prices it could be problematic. Furthermore if inflation increases further it may force the RBI to increase interest rates. If interest rates rise substantially it will leave those indebted facing rising interest payments and potentially reducing consumer spending in the future


6. INEQUALITY HAS RISEN

It is hoped that economic growth would help drag the Indian poor above the poverty line. However so far economic growth has been highly uneven benefiting the skilled and wealthy disproportionately. Many of India’s rural poor are yet to receive any tangible benefit from the India’s economic growth. More than 78 million homes do not have electricity. 33% (268million) of the population live on less than $1 per day. Furthermore with the spread of television in Indian villages the poor are increasingly aware of the disparity between rich and poor.



7. LARGE BUDGET DEFICIT.

India has one of the largest budget deficits in the developing world. Excluding subsidies it amounts to nearly 8% of GDP. Although it is fallen a little in the past year. It still allows little scope for increasing investment in public services like health and education.


8. RIGID LABOR LAWS

As an example Firms employing more than 100 people cannot fire workers without government permission. The effect of this is to discourage firms from expanding to over 100 people. It also discourages foreign investment. Trades Unions have an important political power base and governments often shy away from tackling potentially politically sensitive labor laws.


These are just a few of the problems facing India today. Life in India is nothing but absolute poverty with little hope of survival in the near future. Good education is the key to economic improvement yet India is lacking this essential key in terms of education and hence in terms of economic improvement. what do you think? what are some of the problems facing India today? Indian villagers crippled by fluoride

This is a story of a land where excess fluoride has turned the ground water into a slow poison, crippling at least 10,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousand of others in constant misery.

Ramaswamy can never be cured of fluorosis

This is the story of Nalgonda, one of the poorest and most drought-prone districts of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
The seriousness of the problem can be measured by the fact that the groundwater has 10 to 12 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride in contrast to a maximum permitted level of just 1.5 ppm.
In the dust-filled hamlets and villages hardly 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the state capital Hyderabad there are many living examples of the havoc caused by fluoride.
Shocking
People with paralysing bone diseases, stooped backs, crooked hands and legs, deformed teeth, blindness and other handicaps are a common sight.
The most shocking and sad image of this suffering is Ramaswamy.
At 18-years of age, when other youths are full of enthusiasm for life, Ramaswamy looks to be hardly five-years-old, with a physique completely devastated by the effects of fluoride.
He is so weak that he cannot walk and weighs barely 15 kilogrammes (less than 34 lbs). He is blind and mentally challenged.
He cannot recognise his own name and he cannot even eat by himself.
"We have done all we could have done," says his father Ramalingaiah, himself a victim of fluoride in Anneparti village.
'Dreadful fate'
"Now it is up to the God and government to do something to relieve our sufferings," he says with misty eyes.

Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy, a member of the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly representing Nalgonda district says: "Ramaswamy is the symbol of our dreadful fate, our horrendous sufferings.
"But the government shows no seriousness towards solving the problem".
Mr Reddy represents the opposition Congress party and succeeded in raising the profile of the problem in March when he went on a hunger strike, demanding the completion of a drinking water project.
Although his fast was forcibly broken he succeeded in stirring up public opinion.
His party also mounted pressure on the state's Telugu Desam Government by organising a march of fluoride victims to the Governor's House.
Ram Prakash Sisodia is head of the administration in Nalgonda. He denies the allegations of inaction.
"This problem has been there for ages. The typical underground rock formation with fluoride is the root cause of the problem. And there is no solution other than bringing water from other areas through a pipeline," he says.
Local people have been demanding this for 30 years and say they want a supply of water from the River Krishna, which flows about 100 kilometres (60 miles) south-east of the area.
Crippled
Saidamma is36, but looks like a 60-year-old with grey hair and a thin body.

Supplies of fresh water will be too late for some

She is a widow and is suffering from severe chest pains and recurring fever. Her son is crippled and her grandson was born with defective legs.
With extensive suffering, there is growing anger, frustration and disappointment.
Sudhakar Reddy is handicapped and uses a hand-driven tricycle to move around the village.
"People keep coming to see us as if we are exhibits. They make meaningless promises that water will come. But nothing has happened so far," he says angrily.
Venkat Reddy says this is despite a clear ruling that if the government is not able to supply safe drinking water, it should relocate the villagers.
Mr Sisodia says that day is not far off. "We will start pumping water to these villages by June 2004," he says.
Now that a definite time limit has been given, there is some hope that the region will see drinkable water one day.


But even if that water comes, it will be too late for thousands who had already been crippled by an incurable disease.

Education is the most neglected sector in India

Education is the most neglected sector in India. Ever since independence, several committees and commissions have been appointed to review the existing system of education in India to make it more responsive to our day to day needs. Nothing tangible has been achieved in half a century and education today is as far removed from everyday life as it was before independence.

It is imperative that the existing system of education must be reviewed and recast immediately if it is to have any application in everyday life. It is a tragedy that we teach Shakespeare and the classics to our student in schools and colleges but they can hardly write even an application for leave correctly.

The subjects for different competitive exams require students to be well versed in tests of reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English Language, clerical aptitude, etc, if they aspire to make it to coveted job or position.

Nothing more irrelevant could be found in this country than the existing system of education that has nothing to do with the ground realities. That is why our degree and Diplomas have lost their inherent and innate worth.

Degree and diplomas holders find no place in the job market where experience, initiative and drive count more than any academic qualifications. Hence there is unrest among the educated youth today on account of the burgeoning millions of unemployed among them. This can be remedied only if the existing system of education is critically reviewed and made more meaningful in its application to our day-to-day life.

A sound education set-up facilitates proper human resource utilization, development of technologies and social capability, improvement in the quality of life and social integration.

The facilities for proper educational environment include institutional building, sound study materials, qualified teachers, a sound incentive system for students and teachers,vocational training and employment orientation of the teaching programs. The Indian educational system is lagging in all these respects. This situation has proved the greatest barrier in the way of our progress.
Universal elementary education has remained basically a paper tiger and has not been realized properly. School building are non-existent in tribal and hilly areas. Study materials are not up-to-date. Poor parents and students are not properly motivated to avail of these educational facilities.

Adult education programs are in a shambles. It has become only a matter of statistical jugglery. Our university scenario is quite grim. It is marked by building shortages, lack of proper library facilities, shortage of qualified teachers and above all, lack of autonomy.

Our research institutions are in bad shape. They are suffering from resource constraint and bureaucratic and political interference. They do not produce quality scholars.
On another plane, proper educational facilities have deep implications for the marginalized sections of our society. They become integrated to the societal mainstream though their proper use in the Indian context prevents their educational set-up in favor of marginalized and submerged groups for facilitating their social mobility.
